Background

Following a successful workshop (based around the themes of the report Climate Code Red: The case for a sustainability emergency) held at the Climate Movement Convergence (February 2008, Melbourne) an establishment meeting on the 1st of March 2008 was held, attended by people from right across the state. At this meeting we worked through a number of issues including the purpose of the network, initial campaigns to focus on, and a presentation of Climate Code Red material from David Spratt and Philip Sutton. We also formed a facilitation committee that is helping the initial coordination of the network.
In addition to a charter we have created working groups focussed on Education/Resources, Networking/Lobbying, and CEN Objectives. In addition we made a co-ordinated effort to write and submit a number of submissions to the 2020 summit focusing on the urgency of acting on climate change right across the board.
We are building a large network of groups and organisations that support and actively work towards our objectives, which are underpinned by the key goal of a safe climate future for all generations and species. The network aims to bring together the many climate action groups and community organisations across the nation to work strategically together to bring about change.
We have formed a web based discussion group that is devoted to communicating issues directly related to the Climate Emergency Network. I invite you to join this as a way of keeping informed and adding your own ideas, thoughts and opinions. If you wish to be a part of this group please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and your request will be processed within 24hrs.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Climate Emergency Network and whether you feel your group could support its charter. We really believe it will help band the climate change movement together, provide a direction and maximise our resources time and strength.
